SCBA Summer Internship for High School Students (Application Portal Open!)

Introduction

The SCBA Summer Research Program (SCBA_SRP) is an intensive, 8-week, unpaid internship for high school students. It is designed to provide research experience and mentorship for high school students interested in biomedical research. The Program offers a great opportunity for students to try something new or take their experience to the next level. Under the guidance of a faculty and/or a research staff mentor, interns will participate in the ongoing research of a laboratory and present their findings either within the research group or at the SCBA regular academic seminars.

The program runs from the first week (Jun. 20th) of the summer quarter for 8 weeks. Students must be able to commit to this entire period in order to participate.

Eligibility Requirements:

1) High school students entering the summer after 9th grade but before 12th grade (seniors are not eligible).

2) Strong scientific interest and academic background.

3) Available for the entire eight-week program in a research laboratory located in Seattle.

Application Procedure:

1) Fill out the online form on the website through this link, which includes a number of short-response questions or essays.

2) Provide contact information and request two reference letters to be sent to SCBA

3) Upload a PDF of your recent school transcript.

4) Upload a PDF of your resume.

5) Attend a Zoom interview (for the finalists) with the Selection Committee.

All application components and two letters of recommendation are required.

Interns are responsible for securing their own housing, transportation, and other personal expenses during their internship. Application is due on May 10 this year.

All the qualified applications will be reviewed and judged by SCBA summer internship subcommittee. The acceptance entering the internship program will be announced in May each year.

经过几次酝酿和讨论,并听取了协会荣誉理事、美洲华人生物科学学会现任主席刘善虑的介绍和邀约,协会理事会于二零二二年三月十二日无异议表决通过,西雅图华人生物医学协会决定加入美洲华人生物科学学会,成为其在美国西北地区的一个分会,以西雅图华人生物医学协会暨美洲华人生物科学学会西雅图分会冠名。

美洲华人生物科学学会是成立于一九八四年、拥有数千会员的专业学会,目前在北美与全球拥有四十多个以专业横向建制和以地方纵向建制的分会。加入美洲华人生物科学学会这个大家庭,是基于双方拥有一致的专业方向与相似的建会宗旨;加入美洲华人生物科学学会这个大家庭,西雅图华人生物医学协会将得以在更大的平台上拓展和加强与更多华人学者的联系与交流。

SCBA-SinoBiological Young Investigator Awards Announcement (Application Portal Open!)

Introduction

SCBA-SinoBiological Young Investigator Awards are co-sponsored by the Seattle Chinese Biomedical Association (SCBA) and Sino Biological (Biotechnology company).

SCBA (http://scbahome.org/) is a volunteer run non-profit 501(C)(3) organization founded in 1993 in Seattle. SCBA strives to provide a forum for the exchange of information related to life sciences and the Chinese community in the great Seattle area.

Sino Biological (https://www.sinobiological.com/) is an internationally recognized reagent supplier and service provider specialized in recombinant protein production and antibody development. The company’s ever-growing portfolio of products includes recombinant proteins, monoclonal antibodies, ELISA assay kits, expression clones, cell culture media, and other molecular biology tools.

SCBA-SinoBiological Young Investigator Awards are established to recognize early-career SCBA members in Washington State who have made significant contributions to their respective biomedical research fields. The Awards also value individuals who are committed to making contributions to the SCBA seminars and/or annual meetings.

This year we only accept self-nominations, which means all applicants need to complete an online application process before the indicated deadline. Review processes will take place every year prior to the SCBA annual meeting. Awardees will be invited to present their research in one of SCBA regular seminars or annual meeting either online or in person.

Eligibility Requirements

1) The applicants must be young investigators in their early career as a student pursuing a terminal degree, a postdoctoral fellow, a non-tenured assistant professor within 5 years of starting the faculty position, or a PhD scientist in industry with less than 5 years of experience.

2) The applicant has made significant contribution to their biomedical research field or demonstrated great potential as a graduate student.

3) The applicant is a current SCBA member.

4) The applicant is currently studying or working in Washington State.

Application Procedure

1) Fill out the online form, which includes several short-response questions or essays.

2) Upload a short description of your research and contribution to the field in PDF. This document should be no more than 2 pages with figures and references included (font size 11 point or larger, 1’’ or more margin). The document should be in English. Please do not include any proprietary information.

3) Upload your resume/CV or NIH BioSketch in PDF.

4) Provide 1-2 recommendation letters. The letters can either be sent directly to office@scbahome.org (with award type and applicant name in subject line) or uploaded along with the application.

5) Please submit your application no later than June 30th each year.

Review Process

All applications will be reviewed by a professional review panel consists of experts from both academia and industry. Each application will be scored by all reviewers and ranked, and top candidates will be selected for awards.

Award types, Announcement, and Presentation

Up to a total of four awards will be issued for 2022, with ideally one award in each of the four categories (student, postdoc, industrial scientist and junior faculty). The number of awards in each category will be ultimately determined by the number and credential of respective applicants. Each award will consist of a plaque and an honorarium of $500. The awards will be announced prior to SCBA annual meetings (Oct-Dec). Awardees will be invited to give a presentation of their work in SCBA seminars or annul meetings.

While we are planning to return to in-person activities in 2022, we are monitoring the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic and assessing the safest way for our members and applicants. We will post updates for seminars, annual meetings, and other events on our website.

2021年学术年会暨会员大会通知 (更新)

西雅图华人生物医学协会将于12月18日举行2021年学术年会暨会员大会。

学术年会以“神经科学”为主题,邀请四位享有盛誉的知名学者发表演讲,分享他们在各自领域的研究成果。学术讲座对公众开放,无须登记注册,欢迎感兴趣的各方面人士积极参与。四位特邀演讲人与演讲题目是:

• 阿伦脑科学研究所执行副总裁和所长曾红葵教授:脑细胞类型多样性的研究;
• 福瑞德· 哈金森癌症研究中心白继红副教授:对于神经突触的暂时性胞内体的研究;

1. 美容手术与抗衰老

虽然人类抗衰老是一个非常复杂的议题,但是美容手术(包括外貌的美容与身体的整形)仍旧成为很多不同年龄段希望永葆青春容颜的人们的一个备选方案。身体的整形包括面部整形、胸部整形及其它更复杂的身体部位轮廓整形(包括生育后女性生殖器官的活力回复)。目前美容与整形大都采用侵入性较小的手术,包括肉毒杆菌填充剂注射、埋线提升和激光皮肤磨削术等。对于以上的美容整形手术,选择美容整形外科医生最为重要。本次讲座,浦博士将为大家讲解美容整形的最新进展以及如何选择合格的美容整形外科医生。

2. 让生命暂停:深低温生命保存中的前沿技术的研发与探索
Pause Life: Development of Novel Technology for Biopreservation at Deep Low Temperature
任莘 博士 (Shen Ren, Ph.D., Postdoctoral Scholar, Center for Cryo-Biomedical Engineering and Artificial Organs, University of Washington)

生命体的深低温保存是一种将生物样本置于负196 摄氏度的液氮环境中长期贮存的技术,以使生物体的新陈代谢及其他生命活动暂停。这一技术在生物医药的基础研究及临床实践中均有着广泛的应用。然而长久以来,技术的突破始终被局限在小体积的生物材料。针对大体积(如组织、器官等)生物样本的保存,除了降温过程中的技术难点,复温过程亦存在一系列重大挑战。复温技术上的革新将成为大样品冻存的关键突破,为组织和器官的移植以及药品与疫苗的研发,提供崭新的方向。本次讲座中,任博士将结合所在实验中心近期研究开发的新型高速均匀自动复温系统,综合探讨大样本生物样品低温保存的技术难点和潜在的解决方案。

在本讲座中,郑博士将分享开发双特异性抗体 (BsAbs) 的一些研究案例和经验,针对 1) 在同一细胞上表达的两个膜结合靶标;2) 两个可溶性循环靶标;以及 3) CD3 T细胞重定向抗体。这些采用不同构建方式的大分子药物在过去几年中引起了生物技术和制药公司的极大兴趣并取得很大进展,郑博士将特别阐述这些药物的药代动力学、靶点结合特征和药效学。

2. 细胞疗法在肿瘤免疫治疗中的应用
Overview of cell therapy for Immuno-oncology application
曹澜 博士(Lan Cao, PhD, VP, Oncology Cell Therapy Innovation, Takeda Pharmaceuticals)

自FDA批准Kymriah和Yescarta以来,细胞疗法已引起生物制药公司以及风险投资人的极大兴趣,尤其是针对肿瘤的治疗。但是该领域仍然存在一些重大挑战和空白。例如,如何开发针对血液系统恶性肿瘤更好的产品?治疗实体瘤的突破性产品将会是什么?同种异体细胞产品会取代来自自身的细胞吗?未来最有治疗前景的免疫细胞类型是什么?其规模化生产制造前景如何?在本次讲座中,曹澜博士将就这些话题分享他的观点。

3. 抗体偶联药物开发的关键点
Key Points of Antibody-Drug Conjugate (ADC) Development
王雷,普方生物制药(苏州)有限公司 研发高级总监

ADC药物由三部分组成:抗体、连接子和化合物。由于成分组合复杂多变,每一部分的改变都会对疗效、安全性造成巨大影响。另外,对机制的见解和工艺方面要求非常高,是一条宽进严出的赛道。因此将ADC药物从开发至成功上市,需要对ADC的每个部分进行深入研究、开发,并对其整体进行全面分析。目前全球大约已上市13款ADC药物,有80款候选药物正处于临床阶段,超过50款ADC药物由于缺乏疗效或存在系统性毒性终止了临床试验。因此,ADC药物的开发依然存在门槛高、风险高等特性。本次讲座将回溯ADC的发展历程、当前的ADC进展、讨论ADC开发时需要关注的关键组成部分及如何整体把握ADC等。

杨向东 博士 (Xiangdong Yang, M.D., Ph.D., Professor and Terry Semel Chair in Alzheimer’s Disease Research and Treatment at Department of Psychiatry & Biobehavioral Sciences, David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA)
随着全球人口老龄化到达史无前例的水平,阿尔兹海默症等神经性退行性疾病成为蔓延世界的另一类“瘟疫”。本次讲座,我将以本实验室近期研究开发的新型遗传学模型、系统生物学研究方法和神经生物学研究技术,综合探讨包括阿尔兹海默症和亨廷顿舞蹈症在内的,与老龄化有关的主要神经性退行性疾病的病理机制和可能的临床解决方案。迄今,我们的研究已为找寻新的治疗靶点、开发新的临床治疗方案以及开展临床测试等提供了良好的基础。同时,我也将讨论如何基于新的生物学(非年龄性)标识,来准确测量不同哺乳动物的生物学年龄。基于衰老本身的生物学机制的研究,可能为我们研究延缓和恢复年龄相关性大脑系统疾病,如阿尔兹海默症等,提供崭新的方向。

2. 儿童神经发育障碍性疾病的遗传学研究和进展
The genetics of neurodevelopmental disorders

儿童神经发育障碍性疾病是一组具有高度临床和遗传异质性的复杂疾病,主要包括孤独症谱系障碍、发育迟缓/智力障碍、癫痫以及注意力缺陷多动障碍等,其发病率高,并能严重影响婴幼儿发育、运动和社会适应等,给家庭和社会造成了严重的负担。目前其发病机制尚不完全清楚,但研究发现遗传因素在其中有重要作用。近年来,我们通过国际间合作的大规模测序研究,成功地鉴定了上百个相关的风险基因以及染色体拷贝数变异等致病位点,并对其中部分基因进行了进一步的致病机理研究,为疾病的认识和诊疗提供了新的思路。
